Supplements You May Need, but Might Not Know About: Part 3
This week Nutrition Line will discuss the benefits of another supplement found in Biometics products that many people need, but are not commonly known.
Brain Food: Omega-3 Fatty Acids
It is called a brain food, but an even better description for omega-3 fatty acids is the ultimate health food due to its positive health effects. Recent studies have proven omega-3 fatty acids to be beneficial in lowering risk of heart attack, and stroke. One study found omega-3s to significantly lower rates of depression and another study found that people over the age of 63 saw a slower decline of mental abilities when taking omega-3 fatty acids. Other benefits include possible slowing of tumor growth, reducing of menstrual cramps, and lowering symptoms of asthma and rheumatoid arthritis.
However, despite the long list of health benefits surrounding omega-3 fatty acids, most people no longer consume enough to reap the benefits. There are two main reasons why.
About 100 years ago, cattle began to be fed with grain instead of grass. The change did not seem to be drastic, but the health impact on meat-eaters has been tremendous. Grass fed cattle produces beef that contains an abundance of omega-3 fatty acids, but today, meat no longer contains this valuable component. Instead, most people today consume too many omega-6 fatty acids- a cousin of omega-3.
Omega-6 fatty acids are found in corn, safflower seed, sunflower seed, cottonseed, and soybean, which make up most of today’s popular cooking oils. According to Dr. Artemis Simopoulos, president of the Center of Genetics, Nutrition and Health in Washington D.C., the imbalance of omega-3s and omega-6s can cause an increase in dangerous heart problems, more depression, faster development of tumors, and more autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. The best way to balance out the current imbalance of the American diet is to consume foods that contain omega-3 fatty acids at least twice per week. These foods include cold water fish, walnuts, and flaxseed. However, Dr. Simopoulos suggested that if you do not choose to include these foods in your regular diet, you should take a supplement that contains the Essential Fatty Acids every day. To decrease the amount of omega-6 fatty acids in your diet, avoid foods with vegetable oils, cook with olive oil, and choose dressings, mayo, and margarine made with olive or canola oil.
