February Heart Health Month

In order to call attention to the importance of heart health, since 1963, the United States President has declared February "American Heart Month." Cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, are the number one killer in the US.

Did you know..... on average, the heart pumps about 72 times per minute? This means your heart beats about 103,680 times a day while pumping about 2,000 gallons of blood through your body. With your heart working this hard every day, it is very important to keep it as healthy as possible.

The Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs), particularly the Omega-3s, have been shown to contribute to cardiovascular health in many ways. Omega-3 fatty acids are natural, mild blood thinners, and seem to work by reducing the "stickiness" of blood cells, which could prevent complications like blood clots and stroke. Omega-3 may also reduce hypertension: studies of large groups of people have found that the more Omega-3 fatty acids people consume, the lower their overall blood pressure levels.

EFAs are also becoming more popular among doctors. Symptoms such as blood pressure and cholesterol can be controlled with prescription medications, but for many people these options are unacceptable due to the many side effects. As more and more research is published on EFAs, their effectiveness for controlling blood pressure and cholesterol, and their lack of side effects, doctors are welcoming of the idea of recommending these products for some of their patients.

Several studies have shown that patients with heart and cardiovascular conditions have low levels of Coenzyme Q-10 in their body. Coenzyme Q-10 supplements can aid stabilization of heart rate, help strengthen the heart muscle, help lower blood pressure, and can even decrease symptoms of heart and cardiovascular problems, such as fluid retention in the ankles (edema), and may help periodontal disease, a gum disease that can be a symptom of heart disease.

These supplements are very safe and can be taken together. Anyone under a doctor’s care should not discontinue their prescription medication without first consulting their doctor.
