Vitamin E/Lycopene Combo for Men’s HealthProstate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in America, affecting 1 in 6 men. It is estimated that there are more than 2 million American men currently living with prostate cancer, and the Prostate Cancer Foundation says that in 2006, more than 234,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Treatment varies depending on how advanced the cancer is when found, but include surgery, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, and chemotherapy.
A study released in May 2006 may offer a new route to treatment. It seems that a combination of Lycopene and Vitamin E supplements (but not the nutrients used separately) was found to shrink the size of prostate tumors.
The study was an early one, and involved mice, but the results will lead to more studies on the effects of these nutrients on prostate cancer in humans. Mice with prostate cancer were given either a placebo, Vitamin E in a small dose, Vitamin E in a large dose, Lycopene in a small dose, or Lycopene in a large dose, or a combination of Lycopene and Vitamin E.
After the mice had been given the supplements for 95 days, none of the mice receiving just Vitamin E or just Lycopene had any difference in the size of their tumors. The group that received both Vitamin E and Lycopene had significantly reduced tumor size, and had greater longevity than the mice in the placebo group. Plus, the PSA (prostate specific antigen) levels for the Vitamin E/Lycopene combo group were much lower than in the placebo group.
Who is at risk for prostate cancer? According to the Prostate Cancer Foundation, older age, African American race, and a family history of the disease can all increase the risk of being diagnosed with the disease. Those men most at risk should have an annual screening for prostate cancer beginning at age 45. Men without increased risk should have their exam annually beginning at age 50.
